Sprinkled Candy Muddy Buddies by Burnt Cookies by Murrah
Once it hits October 1st, the holiday season is officially here in my house. That means decorating, crafting, and baking with my 3 year old daughter, Quinn. Normally, I am very focused as I pipe tiny details onto elaborate sugar cookies, while my bored toddler continuously asks me if she can eat it. But when the holidays roll around, I try to find fun and yummy treats we can make together. What is more kid friendly than Chex Muddy Buddies? Plus, it is a very versatile snack that you can easily modify and add to.
This recipe calls for only 5 ingredients, plus any additions you prefer, and can be found on the back of the Chex cereal boxes. I prefer using Rice Chex for this recipe, but there are a lot of fun flavors like Chocolate and Pumpkin Spice if you want to get creative. I start by gathering all my ingredients, and completing the more complicated steps such as pre-measuring, so when we begin Quinn can do almost everything. Depending on your child’s age, have them measure for a great impromptu math lesson!
We used the easy to follow box directions. After microwaving the butter, peanut butter, and chocolate, Quinn stirred it until smooth and we poured it over the cereal. Once that was combined, it was transferred to a ziplock bag for the best part. We call it the powdered sugar shake. This would be a good time to turn on your favorite baking music and bust out your dance moves while you shake your sugar!
Your Muddy Buddies are now ready for their accessories. You can top with whatever candy or nuts you like! My favorite candy as a child was M&Ms, and as an adult I love the peanut butter M&Ms, so we added those. Quinn had to taste test each color first to make sure they were good. Next up was the “icing on the cake” or the sprinkles on the Muddy Buddies. We used the Sprinkle Pop Shop “Monster Mash Up” blend which is perfect for Halloween. It has classic Halloween colors and includes really fun royal icing sprinkles in shapes such as ghosts, pumpkins, and eyeballs. I poured them into a bowl, so Quinn could see the designs as she added them which was a big hit!
These Sprinkled Candy Muddy Buddies are a great gift, party food, or anytime snack! If you stick them in the refrigerator to firm up for a few hours, you can even pour them in a bowl with milk for the best cereal dessert imaginable! - 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- Peanut Butter M&Ms
- Monster Mash Sprinkle Mix
- Into large bowl, measure cereal; set aside.
- In 1-quart microwaveable bowl, microwave chocolate chips, peanut butter and butter uncovered on High 1 minute; stir. Microwave about 30 seconds longer or until mixture can be stirred smooth. Stir in vanilla. Pour mixture over cereal, stirring until evenly coated. Pour into 2-gallon resealable food-storage plastic bag.
- Add powdered sugar. Seal bag; shake until well coated. Spread on waxed paper to cool.
- Once cool, mix in M&Ms and sprinkles. Store in airtight container in refrigerator.
